Question 1.

  1. I buy two kinds of tea, the price of the Ist kind being twice that of the IInd kind. I sell the mixture at Rs 140 per kg thereby making a profit of 20%. If the ratio of Ist and IInd kind of tea in the mixture be 2 : 3, find the cost price of each kind of tea.

  1.    \(Rs.156\frac{2}{3}/ kg, Rs. 73\frac{1}{3}/ kg\)
  2.    \(Rs.166\frac{2}{3}/ kg, Rs. 83\frac{1}{3}/ kg\)
  3.    \(Rs.176\frac{2}{3}/ kg, Rs.93\frac{1}{3}/ kg\)
  4.    none of these
 Discuss Question
Answer: Option B. -> \(Rs.166\frac{2}{3}/ kg, Rs. 83\frac{1}{3}/ kg\)
Question 2.

  1. In what proportion should one variety of rice at Rs 9.50 a kg be mixed with another at Rs 10 per kg to get a mixture worth Rs 9.60 per kg?

  1.    2 : 1
  2.    1 ; 2
  3.    4 : 1
  4.    1 : 4
 Discuss Question
Answer: Option C. -> 4 : 1
Question 3.
  1. 750 candidates appeared in an examination. 70% of the girls and 65% of the boys passed the examination. If total pass percentage was 67% find the number of boys that appeared in the examination.

  1.    300
  2.    350
  3.    400
  4.    450
 Discuss Question
Answer: Option D. -> 450

Let the total number of girls and boys be G and B respectively.

Given,

Pass percentage of girls = 70%
Pass percentage of boys = 65%
Total pass percentage = 67%

We can write,

\frac{70}{100}G + \frac{65}{100}B = \frac{67}{100}(G+B)

\therefore \frac{35}{100}G + \frac{65}{100}B = \frac{33}{100}(G+B)

On solving the equation, we get,

B = \frac{35}{32}G

Now,

G + B = 750

On substituting the value of B in the above equation, we get,

G + \frac{35}{32}G = 750

On solving the equation, we get

G = 400

Hence, the number of boys that appeared in the examination = B = \frac{35}{32}G = \frac{35}{32} \times 400 = 450

Question 4.
  1. The average monthly salary of labourers and supervisors in a factory is Rs 1250 per month, whereas the average monthly salary of 6 supervisors is Rs 2450. If the average monthly salary of the labourers is Rs 950 find the number of labourers.

  1.    24
  2.    30
  3.    36
  4.    none of these
 Discuss Question
Answer: Option A. -> 24

Average monthly salary of labourers and supervisors = Rs 1250
Average monthly salary of supervisors = Rs 2450
Average monthly salary of labourers = Rs 950
Let the number of labourers be 'x' and the number of supervisors be 'y'

Therefore,
Average monthly salary of labourers and supervisors = (950x + 2450y)/(x + y)

On rearranging, we get
950x + 2450y = 1250 (x + y)

Simplifying further, we get
850x = -1200y

Divide both sides by 850
x = -1400/850 y

Since y = 6
Therefore, x = -1400/850 x 6

x = 24

Hence, the number of labourers = 24.
